General Meeting Minutes for 2011



Grand Island Lions Club General Meeting January 12, 2011


Attendance: 19 in attendance) Dick Crawford, Paul Bassette, Donna Lavallee,  Anne Fahning,  Al Ackerman, Dave Chervinsky,  Fred Ruocco, Brooks Rimes, Mike Steinagel, Henry Lobl, Annette Lobl, John McCarthy and guests Paul Barnas, Joe Biondi, Gary Carini, Joe Steinagel, Jack Steinagel, prospective members Mary Jo Tucker and Gary Tucker.

Lion President Dave Chervinsky called the meeting to order at 7:04 PM.  Guests were introduced by Lion Tom Witkowski; DG Gary Carini and past DGs  Joe Biondi and Paul Barnas.  Lion Paul Barnas addressed the club regarding the DG raffle prizes.  The prizes are; 1st;  inlaid Hardwood Lion, 2nd prize, Men's Watch, 3rd prize a walnut weather station, 4th peace poster replica of the grand winner.  Pins are available, directory for members that would like one, cost is $5.  The GI Club was given 10 booklets of 5 tickets to purchase.  Lion Henry introduced new prospective members Gary Tucker and Mary Jo Tucker.  Lion Mike introduced his guests:  Joe and Jack Steinagel.

Split Club: Lion Dick:  $293 in the split club Lion Henry Lobl selected the queen of hearts.

Correspondence:  A number of requests for donations will be reviewed at the board meeting. We received a donation of $50 Julie Lelong in appreciation for the use equipment from the loan closet.  A $50 donation in memory of Lion George Casey.  Lion Anne will be bringing in a request from Excalibur.
 
Committee Reports:
Hands across the border will be Tuesday January 18.
Event calendar February 23 is open Lion Tom will ask his prospective speaker if she will be able to present on that date.
CNA will be April 23rd.
Christmas Trees: Report from Lion Sean:  A preliminary report from the sale of the Christmas Trees.  The Lion’s Club made between $2200 and $2400.  A total of 220 trees were sold, 2 trees were given away.  100 Lions brochures were given out.  A final report will be made available next month. There was a one-time charge of $900 that went towards the purchase of the baler, set up and lighting.  We will not have that expense next year.
Lion Mike - Miracle League.  The status of the grant application; The preliminary work was reviewed by Lions Tom W, Dave and Mike.  The grant then went to Lion Ken Stribing.  Deadlines are very important, Lion DG Gary Carini mailed everything out on Saturday with the endorsement of the district cabinet.  Miracle League has begun fundraising.  They sold 50/50 raffle tickets during the Jr. World Hockey Tournament.  $6000 was raised.  Hopefully enough funds can be raised to begin the groundbreaking this spring. Lion Paul Barnas suggested sending a request to 20N clubs with the possibility for a matching fund through Ray Wheeler foundation.  NYS Bermuda Foundation grants can be applied for as well. 
Bon Ton:  report from Lion Anne:  We collected $450 in sale of the books and a check from Bon-Ton for $233, we only budgeted $500.  This continues to be an easy fundraiser for the club.

Program: Lion Joe Biondi introduced DG Gary Carini.  DG Gary has been a member of Orchard Park Lions Club for 26 years.  He has received the Melvin Jones, Uplinger award, and has served as Cabinet secretary as well as many different posts in the OP Lions Club.
   DG Lion Gary Carini addressed the club.  Gary had the privilege of going to Sydney, Australia to meet with the LC International president.  The DG stressed that service is key to the success of every club.   OP supported the Quest program in the OP middle school.  Community service and letting people know what the Lions Club can provide all types of services for people in need.  This will promote Lionism. There 235 countries that have Lions Clubs and 1.4 million Lions worldwide.
PDG Dave Gehring is working with Brian Kale of a marketing firm to promote Lionism.  There will be a program at the next cabinet meeting with Brain Kale and Dr. Anthone an eye surgeon who has donated cornea transplant surgical procedures. For marketing of club activities contact PDGs Gehring or Jim Muscoreil.
New Business:

Ride for Roswell on August 21st for GI residents.  LP Dave would like the Club to be involved in this event.  More information to follow.  The club will have a guest speaker from Roswell in April.
The main Ride for Roswell will be in June.
Spaghetti Dinner is Monday April 11, 2011.  Tickets will become available soon.
Lion Annette:  reported that the Senior Center really appreciates the clubs participation in Meals on Wheels. They are in need of other volunteers.
Lion Tom:  Has raffle tickets available for a grand prize trip to this year’s Superbowl.

Grand Island Lions Club General Meeting
January 25, 2011

Lion President Dave Chervinsky called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.  Brian Rusk introduced our guest speaker Dr. Ken Anthone.

Split Club: Lion Dick:  $302 in the split club Lion Shelia selected the 6 of clubs.

Correspondence:  DG Gary Carini sent a note in regards to his last visit. 
Lion Mike Steinagel sent in a report regarding the Miracle League.  Teresa Hooper will send a thank you for our participation in split club to the Island Dispatch.  The LCIF matching grant has been submitted and we are waiting to hear.  Miracle League will have a fundraising dinner and ML would like us to sponsor the dinner.  There will be corporate tables at $1000 each for 10 dinners.  Individual tickets are $50.  There will be guest speakers, perhaps Larry Playfair and or Jim Kelly.

Presentation:  Dr. Kenneth Anthone;  Dr. Anthone presented on his foundation “Eyes on America”. Dr. Anthone performs cataract surgery and has traveled around the world teaching his technique.  Candidates must have no health insurance, they also must meet income requirements.  The Dr.’s time is donated, however, the costs of the implants, lens, ($900/each) drops, anesthesia, etc. are funded by the “Eyes on America” foundation.  They have one day a year in which they perform approximately 25 surgeries, this number could easily be doubled.  The goal is to have this opportunity for patients 2 times a year.  They Eye Institute are trying to recruit retinal surgeons and industrial support.  There were some ideas presented for fundraising, LCIF or Catholic Charities.  The Eye on America is in its infancy.  The cost of an average surgery can be between $2000-$5000.   Lion President Dave presented Dr. Anthone with a donation of $100.
Induction:  Induction ceremony of Gary Tucker and Mary Jo Tucker performed by Lion Paul Bassette.

Committee Reports:
Christmas Trees: Report from Lion Brian:  The sale of the Christmas Trees totaled 220 trees.  A net profit was realized of $2142.81. The start-up costs of a banner, baler, set up and lights were approximately $800.  Lion Brian presented members with a spread sheet detailing the sales.
Magnets:  dimensioned 18” x 30”, suggestions from members were making the Lions club logo to be large and the lettering blue perhaps highlighted with gold.
Miracle League:  Discussion was had regarding the wording in the grant regarding “clubs in 20 N”.  We may need to include the names of other clubs in the district.  Lions Mike, Tom and LP Dave will troubleshoot this in case it becomes a problem.  LP Dave reviewed A motion was made by Lion Henry to support the event.  Seconded by Lion Paul, seconded all in favor, motion passed.  Lion Anne made a motion that the club purchase 2 tickets and a paver.  Seconded by Lion Dick C., all in favor, motion passed.
Valentines Party:  Lion Fred and Tammy will plan the event.
Lion Annette:  Correspondence, numerous requests for donations and a thank you from DG Lion Gary Carini. 
 
New Business:
February 9th- Valentines party
February 23rd – Tom Schultz will be our speaker with the topic being investing insights in 2011.
Spaghetti Dinner is Monday April 11, 2011.  Tickets will become available soon.
CNA. The letters have been sent out and a report will be forthcoming.  Lion Bill Wind reported that only 5 Lions from our club have responded to the survey, all Lions are asked to participate.

February 23, 2011

Lion President Dave Chervinsky called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.

Split Club: Lion Dick:  $308 in the split club Lion Dave selected the 4 of spades.

Announcement:  LP Dave.  Reminder of the Merriton’s Bowling Tournament.  The tournament is March 20th, Lion Dick P, Lion Shelia, Lion Henry, Lion Annette and Lion Dick C. will form a  5 person team.  If there are others interested contact Lion Glenn.

Miracle League:  Lion Mike sent a report.  ML is concerned that GI Lions has not been recognized by the Dispatch.  Lancaster Lions Club has agreed to be co sponsors of ML. This alliance was critical for the grant to be considered through LCIF.  The Lancaster’s Club had many questions for Mike.  Lion Dave shared the questions with the club.  Lion Mike has also heard from the Buffalo Sabres Foundation. They will donate $75,000 to ML this was approved on 2/14/11. The Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association indicated that they will also contribute $75,000 with the stipulation that the naming rights be exclusive to the Buffalo Sabres. LCIF had specific questions.  The questions were answered we await an answer from LCIF. 

Presentation:  Tom Schultz; Tom presented the club with some practical investing and financial planning advice.  Tom shared some investment truths and statistics that help guide the individual towards practical investing.  Tom office specializes in retirement portfolio management.  Tom’s company, LPL, also offers a unique personal portfolio called legacy.  Legacy allows the client to record investments and others pertinent information to family and loved ones.  The company has independent brokers that pride themselves on trust and confidentiality.

Committee Reports:
Miracle League and their Corporate Fundraising Dinner will be on March 12 at the BLC.  Interested Lions should request tickets through ML.  Tickets are $50/person. Lion Tom and his wife Diana will represent the club and Lion Tom will offer a few words on behalf of the club.  Tickets can be obtained through Miracle League P.O.  Box 833, GI, NY.   The time of the event is 6 PM silent auction and Reception, dinner 6:30 PM.  The club will buy a paver.

Convention:  Early registration Deadline is March 15th at the cost of $30.  The convention is in Rochester.  April 29th to May 1, 2011. 

Event Calendar:   Lion Ken Butkowski will be with us on March 9th and will address the club on LCIF.  March 23rd is at the Merritton's.  Lions Club Spaghetti Dinner is April 11th. CNA meeting April 13th.  April 27, presentation on Ride for Roswell and a possible speaker on stem cell research is May 11th.

District 20N 4th cabinet meeting:  Sunday March 27, 2011 at the OP American Legion Post #567.  Lion Tom and Lion Dave will attend

BonTon: Community Days are Sat and Sunday Feb 26 and Feb 27.

Lions Blind and Charity Fund:  Lion Paul; our club has 5 shares.  As always we need volunteers to stuff envelopes in October.  In 2010 we were second in the district with contributions totaling $677.  There were 13 members of our club responding to the Blind and Charity Fund.   The funds are distributed with 50% going to UNYTS and 50% going back to the contributing clubs.  This year we will receive $975.45.  This is an increase over last year’s total of $922.65.  The form needs to be filled out in order to receive the funds.  The form is due April 1, 2011.

Spaghetti Dinner:  Lion Dick distributed the tickets to members present.

Metalico:  Lion Tom and Dave delivered ½ ton of metal.  $519.45 was earned.  Tom presented a $500 check to the club.

Tom Rusert:  Dr. Andy’s Day for Kids is Sunday Feb. 27th at the Buffalo Brew Pub.   The event goes from noon until whenever.  Funds raised go to the Neonatal intensive care unit at Sisters Hospital.  This is a fun worthwhile event all are invited.

March 9, 2011

Lion President Elect Anne Fahning called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.

Split Club: Lion Dick:  $315 in the split club Lion Bill selected the 7 of clubs.

Spaghetti Dinner:  Lion Dick announced that the donations from Tops with be significantly less this year at about $400.  Keep selling those tickets!!
Presentation Lion Ken Butkowski:  Lion Ken addressed the club on the broad scope and many activities of Lions Club International Foundation.  Vision beyond Sight, Walk for sight.  Worldwide natural disaster relief for  tsunami, hurricane, earthquake relief.  LCIF was created in 1968, since that time almost 9000 grants have been issued with almost 700 million dollars awarded.  There is a measles initiative in partnership with the Pzifer Corporation in an effort to control the outbreak of measles in the world.  As of 11/30/10 LCIF had 1.3 million members.  There have been $300,000 in grants issued to district 20 N over the past 30 years.  Some of these grants Ross Eye Institute, plane crash in Clarence, pending Miracle League.  For the LCIF 100% of the monies donated goes back out in grant form. Lion Ken did some research on the GI Lions Club 10 Melvin Jones awards and 1 progressive Melvin Jones award.

Grand Island Lions Club Meeting April 13,2011, Holiday Inn, Grand Island, N.Y.

Lion President Dave Chervinsky called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.

Pledge led by Lion Shelia, Patriotic Song led by Lion Fred, and Prayer led by Lion Paul.   Lion Tom Rusert  introduced his son, Tom, Chief Officer of the US Customs Bureau for all ports of entry in New York State outside the city of New York and the metropolitan areas.  Lion Fred passed the bucket for monies for Blind fund,  Split Club at $ 323. Diane Dubiel did not pick the ace of spades. No Winner.

Miracle League

President Theresa Hooper was presented with two $1000 checks this evening. $1000 was from  Lions District 20N. The check was originally given to Lion Tom Witkowski from DG Gary Carini at the last cabinet meeting.  The second  $1000 was presented by Amherst Lion Club

President Herb Wilber (proceeds from the Amherst Lions Pancake breakfast).

The ground breaking is April 15 at 2pm.  Members are asked to attend with their gold vests on.

Program

Officer Rusert provided a comprehensive overview of the functions of Customs, Border Patrol and Immigration. All these bureaus are now under the Department of Homeland Security. He talked about the role of Customs in Drug Trafficking and the types of surveillance equipment used to inspect cars ,buses and trucks. A question and answer period completed the presentation with a video.

Next Meeting is Wednesday April 27 at the Buffalo Launch Club.

April 27, 2011

Lion President Dave called the meeting to order at 7:09 PM.  Lion President Dave introduced our guests, Dan Heimes and Andrea Gregory presenting on the Ride for Roswell.

Split Club: Lion Dick:  $331 in the split club Lion Diane was selected.  The Queen of spades was drawn.

Spaghetti Dinner:  Lion Dick announced that the so far the proceeds have totaled $4371.50. There is close to $1000 in expenses.  Therefore we will probably come close to our budgeted $4500.  We may try to reach out to Chefs restaurant and Gioia Spaghetti for contributions next year.

Lions Vests:  Lion Annette:  Lion Annette announced that if anyone would like a vest they should go on the LCIF website, the vests are about $32.  We need a minimum order of 12 to have a discount.  Interested people should order vests on their own.  We have the possibility of ordering short sleeve polo shirts for $22.95, for sizes small through XL.  Stuarts in Lewiston will embroidery the name and the Lions logo would be pressed on.  Perhaps Stuarts would give us a sample.  Do we want these for the 4th of July parade?   If we could get a picture of the shirt Brooks could publish it in the newsletter.

Journey for Sight:   Lion Tom Witkowski - May 14, 2011.  The Journey will be moved tentatively to Long State Park down by Lake Chautauqua.  Details and emails to follow with pertinent information.

The state convention will be next week.  Vision Beyond Sight has a new chairman, PDG Jeff Stribing, along with Lion Dr. Dave Clifford.  Some of the patients that were helped with Vision Beyond Sight have not been coming back for follow up care because of lack of personal funds.  DG Gary’s Roast was a big success.

Presentation:  Dan Heimes and Andrea Gregory from the Ride for Roswell:  Andrea and Dan work for the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation.  Ride for Roswell began as a fundraising endeavor.  The ride is considered unrestricted funding.  This funding allows the Dr.’s at Roswell to have seed money to develop a research idea that hopefully will lead to a National Grant.  The ride this year June 25th from UB’s Baird Point. Last year the event raised 2.8million.  This year they hope to raise 3 million. Last year there were 574 teams of 4 or more people.  There is a $150 minimum fundraising for each rider.  There are fundraising kits available when someone registers.  There are virtual riders that can also be part of a team.  There are 10 different routes of various lengths.  There are many opportunities to contribute.  One of the sub events will be held on Grand Island on August 21.  For this event there is a goal of 100 riders, a 3 mile family fun route, a 25 mile or 50 mile route.  There may also be a 12 mile route.  The start point will be Beaver Island State Park.  There are many volunteers that are needed. There is a $10 registration fee, there is a $100 minimum fund raising.  If you have rode on the ride in June there is a $50 minimum fundraising.  The process for getting registered is on the website.

Committee Reports:
 
· Miracle League:  Lion Mike: LCIF Grant was approved for the full amount of $75k.  We will have the Lion Club international logo embedded on the on deck batters circle.  There was a possibility initially that the grant would not be approved because LCIF have helped fund two other Miracle Leagues fields in the country, fortunately this was not the case with our request!
· Lion Diane: The Merritton Lobster fest is approaching.  If people are interested in going please see Lion Diane.  The cost is $70/person.
· Kids Day:  The event was a big success with 4 Lions participating,
· Corresponding Secretary:  Lion Annette:  We received a donation of $25 on behalf of a family who received the use of a wheelchair from the loan closet.
· Dues:  Dues are coming in.

Grand Island Lions Club General Meeting
May 11, 2011

Lion President Dave called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.  Pledge, Patriotic song and prayer were shared. Lion President Dave introduced our guest, Luella Kenny a researcher at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Split Club: Lion Dick: $339 in the split club Lion Dick Planavsky was selected.  The three of clubs was drawn.

Presentation:  Luella Kenny:  Luella Kenny is a retired researcher from Roswell Park Cancer Institute.  Luella lived in Love Canal at the time of the Love Canal disaster.  Luella youngest son acquired an immune disorder and died as a direct result of playing in the seeping chemicals through the ground water.  Luella and her chemist husband have worked tirelessly for the past 33 years to direct benefits to the people affected by Love Canal.  This was achieved through health studies.  There is a link through LCIF for interested parties to see the documentation regarding Love Canal.  There is still a board of directors that still works on claims.

Correspondence Secretary Report:  Lion Annette – Lion Annette brought a sample of the shirt material.  The shirts are a polo type.  The cost is $22, would have the Lions’s Club International logo would be screened on and the name the Grand Island Lions Club and the Lion’s name would be embroidered on.  Women’s are 100% cotton and the men’s are 90% cotton and 10% polyester.

Members need to pay their dues if they haven’t already done so.

Committee Reports:

Spaghetti Dinner:  Lion Dick  The proceeds from the dinner will most likely be approximately $4500.
Miracle League:  Lion Mike: via email.  Lion Mike was asked to join the ML board of directors, however, he declined.  We feel that it is important for the Lions to have a presence on their board.  Lion Henry has offered his services.  Lion Dave will contact Theresa Hooper in regards to this. 
Lion Tom had information from the ML fundraiser this past weekend.  Tom had forms and fundraiser information and volunteer information.
Peace Poster Awards: Lion Dave reported on Lion Paul’s announced that the 1st and 2nd place winners and their parents will be invited to come to our next meeting.
Journey for Sight:   Lion Tom Witkowski - May 14, 2011.  The Journey will be moved tentatively to Long State Park down by Lake Chautauqua.  Three organizations are benefited, Blind Association for Chautauqua County and the Special Needs Adult Services and the Senior advocates for Meals on Wheels.  Registration begins at 10 AM.
Lion Jerry:  July 16th Vegas Night and Chicken Dinner at the KOC.  1/3 of the profits will go towards the LC.
Merritons Lobsterfest:  Lion Diane, May 28th 7 PM
Convention:  Lion Dave:  At the state convention Kim Stribing was assaulted in Rochester.  Dave has her address if anyone wants to send a card.  Our club split 3 tickets and our club may be eligible for an additional Uplinger award.  There were a few registration payments issues that seemed to be questionable at the convention.
Mike Metzner:  June 5th Juvenile Diabetes 8:30- 2 PM an annual event held at Fantasy Island.  Volunteers are needed.  An email will be sent out.
Lion Fred Mellon:  NC Lions club they are looking for extra walkers, canes etc from our loan closet, someone will be up shortly.  The supplies will be taken to South Africa.  Perhaps we can contact other district clubs.
Fuccillo Chevorlet:  Fuccillo will provide the chicken and charcoal, grills.  It would be up to the club to decide if we want to use this as a fundraiser.  The times from 11 AM – 2PM to sell some chickens.  Our club will parboil the chickens before then grill them at sight.  Our club will do this on May 28th.  Lion Henry, Lion Annette, Lion Fred, Lion Dave, Lion Anne.

Grand Island Lions Club General Meeting
May 25, 2011

Lion President Dave called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.  Pledge, Patriotic song and prayer were shared.

Lion Paul Bassette introduced our guests, Lindsey Lepenven and Alyssa Maxwell peace poster winners and their families.

Split Club: Lion Dick: $346 in the split club Lion Tom Rusert was selected.  The jack of spades was drawn.

Presentation:  Peace Poster Winners:  Lion Paul Bassette discussed the objectives of the peace poster contest.   The contest is for 11-13 year olds.  This year’s theme was “Vision of Peace”.  The posters are judged on originality, use of theme and artistic ability.  This year we had 64 posters in the contest.  Second place winner Alyssa Maxwell from Connor Middle School.  Alyssa presented her poster to the club.  Our first place winner Lindsey Lepenven from St. Stephens school presented her poster to the club.  Both Posters will be on display in the Grand Island Library throughout the next year.

Correspondence Secretary Report:  Lion Henry – Polo shirt cost is $22.88.  Lions who would like to order a shirt please contact Lion Annette.  Orders need to be in by June 1.  Anyone interested in volunteering or contributing to Miracle League, forms will be available.  Thank you letter was received for Docs Day for Kids.

Committee Reports:

Miracle League:  Lion Dave:  Lion Mike will continue to be the clubs liaison, however, he does not want to serve on the board.  Lion Dave will speak to Theresa Hooper in regards to Lion Henry serving on the board of Miracle League.  The LCIF logo will be for the on deck batter circle.  We may also want to look into buying an

advertising board on the fence in the outfield.  The LCIF grant information has been forwarded to Brian Kahle.  Perhaps for the grand opening we should invite PDG’s,  DG, etc.
Special Kids Picnic: Lion Henry reported on Lion Annette progress on the picnic planning.
 July 4th Parade:  Lion Dave has contacted Lion Brian to check on the magnetic car signs and to date has no response.
Scholarships:  Lion Paul:  the committee has met and reviewed 16 applicants.  Four winners were selected, 3 from GIHS and 1 from Holy Angels.  A picture will be taken after the graduation.
Journey for Sight:  Just under $4200 was raised.  Lions from the Barker Lions Club raised $1100 of this amount.  Next year the Journey for Sight will be in Cattaraugus County in Allegheny State Park.  Lion Tom made the first presentation of the funds raised in Frewsburg for the SNAP program.
Lion Fred Mellon:  Collecting items from loan closets.  Lion Tom will check with other clubs.

 For the good of the club:  Lion Jerry brought up the fact that the meeting on the second floor in the Launch Club is problematic for some members and guests.  Discussion was had.  Lion Anne and Lion Dick can meet with BLC manager Jim to request that if we can not be on the first floor that he let us know so that we can make other plans.  

Fuccillo Chevorlet:  Lion Dick:  Sat May 28th from 11 AM -2 PM.  We have 48 chickens to sell.  If we do not sell out the chicken will be donated.  Meals are all take out, $8 for ½ chicken, potato salad and drink.  Proceeds will go for Miracle League.  We will bring our banner.

New Business:  A chicken dinner fundraiser for DG Clancy Burkwit  in August.  There is also a fundraiser for DG Burkwit for a Lions Vest that is loaded with pins.  The drawing for the vest will be in November.
Installation Dinner:  At the next general meeting.  Lion Henry is planning.
Couples Picnic:  The Saturday after the SKP at the Fahnings meet at 2:30, cost is $15 for the meal, boat ride and cocktails on the dock.  All are invited.  Lion Paul will invite the widows.

Committee Reports: 
Treasurers Report:  We have roughly $10K in our budget.
Miracle League is looking for a scoreboard.  The cost would be $3000 for our club; this was voted on at the board meeting. Our GI Lions club logo would be on the scoreboard.  There is another business that is interested in co sponsoring this with the club.  Questions were answered.  There have been 65 teams that have signed up to play so far for next year.  Miracle League has a contract with the town of GI. ML will provide $10k/year for assistance with maintenance of the field, power washing the field, clean bathrooms, lawn cutting, etc.  The town is looking at a camera system to help prevent vandalism.
Corresponding Secretaries Report:  September 17th a BBQ for Wings Flight of Hope between 4-11 PM.  Lion Shelia and guest will attend.  November 22, Depew Lions will have a Raffle.  KOC will have a Pig Roast on October 1 at 6 PM.  Lancaster Lion Pancake Breakfast 10/15, tickets are $5.50.  Excalibur had a feature in their newsletter on SKP.  The DG newsletter also had coverage on the SKP.
Lion Fred:  Cheryl Chamberlain, a teacher at GIHS approached Lion Fred about a fundraiser for the Lions Club. Clubs from the school would decorate Christmas Trees, and then Businesses would purchase the trees for placement inside their place of business.  A motion was made to donate up to 1 dozen trees to the school for this project.  Seconded by Lion Tom, discussion.  There are many issues that need to be ironed out.  Vote, all in favor, motion passed.
Bon Ton Lion Anne:  Community Days will be Friday and Saturday November 11 and 12, 2011.  Please purchase books as the club benefits greatly from this.
Lion Paul:  There is an anonymous donor on GI that will be donating $1000 each year for the life of the donor for the Club to award a Melvin Jones every year.  The donor would like these awards to go 3 out of 4 or 5 years to a member of the community that gives humanitarian service.
White Cane Sale:  We were not allowed to collect in front of Tops this year, however, over $1000 was raised.
Crop Walk:  September 25th, north pavilion in Beaver Island State Park.  Lion Tom informed that 25% of the monies raised would go to the GI neighbors association and TUMC food pantry.  The rest of the money will go to Church Worlds Services to fight world hunger.
Club excellence program:  Lion Tom, GI Lions, Wheatfield Lion and Pendleton Lions.  These clubs members will be questioned on their involvement in Lions and a Community Needs Assessment will come from this.  Tom will be presenting at the Cabinet Meeting.
Excalibur is also seeking support as much of their finding has been cut.  This will be forwarded to the budget committee.

Guest Speaker:  Judy Tafelski, Town Assessor.  Judy is working on a town re assessment.  An assessment has not been done since 1986. Judy assured the group that assessment and taxes are not the same thing.  The town is trying to establish equality for all constituents of the town.  The town needs to do a re-evaluation of the town properties to ensure fair distribution of property values.  Not all properties will change at the same rate.   The town has about 60 new builds a year.  The equalization rate is 46.5%.  STAR exemptions are still in effect.  Financial considerations and timetable were presented.  Questions and discussion.
 
Induction of New Member:  Christina Trinko.  The induction of Christina Trinko.  Lion Paul Bassette conducted the induction ceremony.
The new transfer member Lion Mark Trinko is a past District Governor.

The next meeting will be our meeting with the Merrttons 10-12-11 meeting place TBD.  Traditionally we have had this meeting at the KOC.

Treasurers Report:  Lion Dick We have money.
Secretaries Report:  Lion Shelia.  We received a Thank you card from ML.
Bon Ton Community Days; Lion Annette has booklets available.  The dates are Nov 11 and 12, 2011.
Cabinet Meeting:  Lion Tom Witkowski. 
The cabinet meeting was this past weekend. 
The peace poster deadline is Nov. 5th. 
The sub district cabinet meeting will select new officers. 
District 20 N has lost 2 very involved members of the Vision Beyond Sight committee.
The state convention band is supported by the clubs.  Interested local band students are encouraged to apply. 
PDG leadership award are due Dec 15, 2011 NYS Bermuda Lions raffle tickets will be available for the state convention. 
Our club was recognized for the grant that we were awarded through LCIF for Miracle League.
Merrittons meeting:  Lion Jerry.  KOC no longer does their own catering.  The food is now provided by Riverstone Grill.  There is a $100 hall rental fee.  Lion Tom made a motion that we keep own meeting at the KOC, discussion; we may have a raffle to offset some of the cost of the hall rental. All in favor, motion passed.
Lion Al Ackerman was recognized.  Lion Al has been a member for 44 years!
Lion Dan:  Spaghetti Dinner is scheduled for March 26.  Lion Dan would like to move the date, as he will not back until April 1.  We will consider moving the date.

New Business:  Next meeting is at the KOC on October 12, 2011.  The program for October 26 will be Legal Services for the elderly, disabled or disadvantaged of WNY.

Lion Gary:  Regarding our Spring presentation from Dr. Anthone, Gary met with Dr. Anthone last night they will be during eye surgery on 25 patients that have no insurance.  This time they will try to have 25 people then one month later complete the procedure on the patients other eye.  Our club will be our liaison for transportation and assistance.  Interested members could apply to be Dr. Anthone’s board of directors. 
Lion Jerry:  KOC Queen of Hearts tickets are for $1, winners will be drawn on Saturday.  Vegas night will be this Saturday October 15 4:30 -7:30 BBQ dinner.  6 PM will be Vegas set up.  November 25 KOC will have a wine and cheese tasting $2person or $35/couple.
Lion Paul- Blind and Charity Fund:  Volunteers are needed to stuff envelopes   Lion Jerry, Lion Paul, Lion Donna and Lion Al, maybe for Lion Dick C.  Members will meet at Mighty Taco at 8:30 to carpool for UNYTS.
We still need a program for the November 9th.  Lion Tom W will address the club on the club excellence program.
Diabetes Screening will be held off until next year.  Lions Mary Jo, Lion Gary and Lion Shelia will meet after the first of the year.
Lion Dick:  The date of the Spaghetti Dinner has been changed to April 16.

Lion Jeff from Merritton:  Turkey Raffle tickets are for sale.  Sight awareness bowling will be on November 12th.  Parade that Lion Jeff runs on Labor Day is in need of marching bands if anyone knows of any that may be interested in participating please call or email Lion Jeff.

Minutes  Grand Island Lions Club Meeting of October 26, 2011

President Ann Fanning called the meeting to order at 7:06 PM. Ms. Beata Banas from the Legal Services for the Elderly program was introduced as the meeting's guest speaker. Dave Chervinsky drew the card for the $375 jackpot in the ongoing prize drawing but was unsuccessful. Dick Crawford reported that the raffle from the joint meeting with Merritton on 10/12/11 raised $ 130.00 for the club.
Our speaker, Beata Banas, provided information on the not-for-profit agency Legal Services for the Elderly or Disadvantaged of WNY. Persons wishing to use their services should call the agency at 716 853-3087. If you qualify for the free services, a file will be opened and you will be contacted by their intake paralegal.
Henry Lobl announced that the club is sponsoring Community Days at Wendy's on Grand Island on 11/2/11. The club will receive 10% of all sales between the hours of 4 and 8 PM. Lions were asked to host and/or eat at Wendy's at that time. Dick Planavsky gave a report on the White Cane fund drive and gave suggestions for future fund drives. Diane Dubiel reported that 76 entries were received for the peace poster contest. The first place winner will be taken to the cabinet to compete with winners from other clubs.

Sean Kelly reported on the club's second annual Christmas tree sale at Kelly's Country
Store. Sean made a proposal that the Kelly's staff handle all aspects of the sale this year
with the proceeds going to the Grand Island Lions Club. Annette Lobl made a motion,
seconded by Dick Planavsky, that the club accepts this proposal, which was passed
unanimously. Although club members will not be involved in the sale operations, they
are invited to attend the sale to greet the public and discuss the community activities and
services provided by the club. .

Announcements –
Lion Dick: $382 Split club, Lion Christina, Lion Tom R and Lion Dan were absent, Lion Norm was drawn. The 3 of spades was drawn.

Program:  Lion Tom Witkowski;  Lion Tom presented on Global Membership Team concept for District 20 N.  MERL.  Club Excellence Program, what does and doesn’t work for clubs.  We need members to provide feedback on what is working and not working for the  Lions Club.  There is a 2 part survey, a club excellence program and a community needs analysis.  Tom would ike 75% of our club to respond to the survey.  Honesty is key, it can be filled out completely anonymously.  Tom reviewed the responses thus far.  So far the areas that we are lacking:
Cub meetings;
Minutes reviewed and read at general meeting.
Treasurers report reviewed
Programs be varied and interesting.
Establishing yearly goals. 
Membership;
Recruitment plan.
 New members assigned to a committee
New members sharing information about themselves. 
Club activites:
Member majority participation in all projects
Respondent being asked too much for
Club support of district projects
Club support of international projects
Respondent aware of service goals.
Personal satisfaction: improvement is needed in the following areas
Encouraged to set personal goals
Challenged to try new things
Encouraged to visit other clubs
There is a need for ongoing discussion regarding these issues so that we can continue to improve our club. 

Report from PDG Lion Tom Reinagel on Lions Club Blind and Charity Fund;
Lion Blind and Charity Club, our club has club has received 25,000 over the past 10 years.

Committee Reports: 
Budget Meeting was conducted prior to the general meeting.  Additional resources will be explored to add to our welfare fund.  There is an approval of $3k to Miracle League.  Initially it was earmarked for a scoreboard, however, this is no longer an option for the money.  Additionally funding to neighbors foundation for food to the less fortunate during the holidays, city mission, Salvation Army were suggestions. Suggestions for other charities can be emailed to Lion Dick.
Christmas Party:  Lion Fred:  Announced that for the Christmas Party each person should bring one unwrapped toy for a child and or a non perishable item to be distributed through the GI Neighbors foundation.
Secretaries Report:  Lion Shelia:  nothing to report.
BonTon:  Lion Annette:  We have a few more books to sell.  Lions Shelia, Lion Annette and Lion Henry will work at the store on Friday and Saturday.
Wendy’s Community Day:   A success, $135 dollars was given to the treasurer.

New Business:  Wed 11/23 at 9 AM  help is needed to put trees, lights and stands up, etc.  at Kelly’s Country Store for the annual Christmas Tree Sale. 

Next meeting is at the  on December 14, 2011.  The program will be the Christmas Party.
